  1. It looks a bit more serious than a latch into a fenced yard. Maybe a latch into your past instead? It looks like it is pretty much open, as far as latches go…

    1. I’ve had similar thoughts to yours after living with this sketch for a few days; that this is an image that probably represents something subconscious rather than an actual object from my childhood. There is an aspect, a quality in the drawing, that seems to hint that this image really isn’t about a gate from my childhood at all. When I try to remember the actual latch, all I can remember is an understanding of how it worked, not what it looked like. I’ve tried really hard to remember the actual latch, and I can’t. I know it didn’t look like this, but I know it worked like this. I’m intrigued by the fact that “how it worked” seems so important to me now. And I agree: there is something optimistic and comforting that it appears to be “open”.
